It may be "summer camp" on the calendar, but here in Madagascar it's the middle of winter, and that hasn't cooled anyone's enthusiasm. This week, Elevatus Foundation launched its 2026 Summer Camp for the 40 children of our Youth Center.
The goal is simple: give the children a chance to learn, grow in new directions, and gain practical skills they can use in everyday life. Three times a week, they gather at the Youth Center and rotate through three workshops.
Sewing
Around the sewing machines, the children are learning the basics: measuring, cutting, pinning, stitching by hand and by machine. Guided by our instructor, they have already started turning bright polka-dot and checkered fabric into their first projects. Beyond the fun of creating something with their own hands, these are real skills that can open doors later on.
Cooking
Outdoors in the courtyard, the children are discovering the fundamentals of preparing a meal: hygiene, organization, and simple recipes they can reproduce at home. Working in small teams, they chopped, mixed and plated everything from fresh salads to deviled eggs, and even took on a homemade pizza. Learning to cook is learning independence, and the results were as colorful as they were delicious.
Sport
Of course, camp isn't complete without some time on the court. Basketball sessions help the children stay active and build discipline, teamwork and friendships with one another.
